Are we really going to see the Amero?

For the last few years, there has been talk about a North American currency. The recent success of the euro, and efforts by six Persian Gulf states to create a unified currency, have created a climate in which there is speculation that Canada, Mexico and the United States would enter a similar arrangement. Trade agreements such as NAFTA certainly play a role in keeping speculation about the Amero alive and well. But what is the Amero? What are the myths surrounding this North American currency? And what are bloggers saying about the Amero? Here are 25 sites that can answer your questions about the Amero.

General Information About the Amero

The Amero was originally suggested by Canadian Herbert C. Grubel in 1999 on the eve of the European Union. Since then, it has taken on a history of its own, with politicians and pundits alike talking about it and analyzing its possible effects. Here are some Web sites that offer insight, history and information about the Amero.

CurrencyTrading.net offers an excellent overview of the Amero, the history of the idea, and the benefits and drawbacks of a North American currency union. It also includes a section on how an Amero might affect the currency market.

Wikipedia: “North American currency union” provides information regarding the history of the Amero, as well as support for the Amero in some regions. Additionally, it includes concerns about adopting a single currency for North America.

GlobalResearch.ca: “North-American Monetary Integration: Here Comes the Amero” tracks the progress of thought surrounding the Amero and currency arrangements in North America. A great history of which groups are interested in a currency union, as well as steps that some think could precede the adoption of the Amero.

The U.S. Government offers a section on its Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America Web site addressing the efforts being made by North American countries to cooperate. This also includes information about Amero rumors.

Gold-Eagle.com offers an interesting look at the history of U.S. currency, as well as how it might transition into the Amero — before pointing out the reasons that actually making the leap to a unified North American currency is unlikely.

Busting Myths Surrounding the Amero

There are plenty of myths surrounding the Amero, from so-called coins that have been minted and bills circulated, to the idea that the release of the Amero is imminent across North America. These sites offer motivations behind the perpetuation of the Amero myth, as well as debunking the idea that a North American Union is about to descend upon us. You don’t have to attend the most expensive college to understand that the Amero just isn’t happening (anytime soon at least).

Snopes.com debunks the idea that the U.S. (possibly at the Denver Mint) has been producing Amero coins.

The Lang Report offers in-depth information about the exaggeration of current events that is feeding reports of an imminent North American currency union.

The Seattle Times offers an editorial by Bruce Ramsey about the origin of the mythology surrounding the Amero and a super-sovereign North American Union — and why it is largely unlikely.

Mises Economics Blog provides a brief look at where the Amero coin images came from, as well as debunking the reasons that the Amero myth keeps circulating.

Irregular Times follows the ways in which the Amero myth is used as a political tool to drum up fear for American sovereignty and try to and mobilize supporters.

The Boston Globe delves into what is behind the fascination with the Amero myth, and the basics of this conspiracy theory.

Mr. Swing points out that Candian radio host Hal Turner is largely responsible for the most recent frenzy over the Amero, with his assertion that a “rogue Treasury agent” provided him with a “real” Amero coin.

Blogs, Posts and Web Sites About the Amero

There are plenty of blog posts and Web sites about the Amero. Watch out, though: You can’t believe everything you read online. And, for a shameless plug, I just have to include my April Fool’s post on the Amero.

Amero Currency is a blog that offers news and information on the Amero. It even provides information on where you can buy the latest editions of Amero coins (not legal tender).

AmeroCurrency.com offers a look at a world in which America is superseded and offers information about the plans to introduce a North American currency.

North American Amero is a blog devoted to watching for the Amero, and for the advent of the North American Union.

DC-Coin.com is the Web site of Daniel Carr, the original designer of an Amero coin. You can buy his designs of Amero coins for novelty and collection purposes. Obviously, you won’t be able to spend them at the store.

InvestmentWatch offers a post (with video) of Amero coins sent to China. With the U.S. dollar on the verge of worthlessness…

Amero.aT is a blog devoted to “Amero watch”, with emphasis on an interpretation of events according to the Austrian school.

Illuminati Archives offers video proof of an Amero coin.

The Amero – What Are The Plans? is an interesting post from MyOneSource.com that explores the plan behind supplanting the U.S. dollar with the Amero.

The Amero Info Site provides basic information on the Amero, and its affects.

Videos on the Amero

Disclose.tv offers an interesting a video about the North American Union, the Amero and trade. Video includes Obama’s response to a question about the NAU and the Amero, as well as something from Lou Dobbs.

InfoWars.com provides a discussion of the Amero on CNBC.

NowPublic.com has a video presention on the Amero — complete with a rap song.

YouTube has an interesting interview with Herbert Grubel about the Amero, and the backlash against the idea of a unified North American currency.

14 dogs and cats who make more money than you do.

We hear about millionaires — and billionaires — quite frequently. But less often do we hear about pet millionaires. They do, however, exist. Since 1923, when the first reported case of a pet inheritance was affirmed in Willett vs. Willett, pets have been receiving money. Sometimes quite a lot of money. Here are seven dogs and seven cats (in particular order) that are probably richer than you:

Some of the World’s Richest Dogs

These dogs know how to live the high life. Seriously. They give a whole new meaning to the phrase “being treated like a dog.”

Gunther IV, the German Shepherd: This dog actually received his inheritance from his father, Gunther III, a German Shepherd who received an inheritance from Karlotta Liebenstein, a German countess. Gunther IV has bought a Miami villa from Madonna and won a rare white truffle in an auction. Learn more about Gunther IV on a Web site devoted to him and those he hangs out with. He’s worth about $372 million right now, thanks to his growing trust fund.

Oprah’s dogs: Oprah Winfrey has several animals, including some dogs. She wants to make sure that her dogs are cared for when she is gone. Her will specifies that that her dogs receive $30 million for their care. (Just a drop in the bucket when you look at the billions Oprah is worth.) True, that money will be split amongst all dogs that she has, but even so, each and every one is probably richer than you are. They’re definitely richer than I am.

Trouble Helmsley: New York’s “Queen of Mean”, Leona Helmsley, famously cut her grandchildren out of her will, but left her Maltese terrier $12 million. However, a judge knocked $10 million off that amount, so that brings the amount to $2 million. Additionally, Trouble will be not be so well taken care of after death, as the dog can’t be buried in the Helmsley mausoleum, due to cemetary requirements and state law.

Flossie: Drew Barrymore’s yellow Labrador retriever and chow mix, Flossie, has been left a home. Flossie awakened Barrymore and then-boyfriend Tom Green when a fire raged through the home. Barrymore amended her will to leave the home, valued at $3 million, to Flossie in return for this possibly life-saving deed.

Tina and Kate: These two collie crosses received $1 million for their care upon the death of their owner Nora Hardwell. In addition to the provision for their care, Tina and Kate also enjoy unlimited use of the lovely home Hardwell occupied near Bath, England, in a town called Peasedown St. John. The home comes with five acres, so these millionaire dogs have plenty of room to run.

Jasper and Jason: These dogs live in luxury, since the death of their owner. Jasper is a Labrador and Doberman mix. He was destined for euthanization after being abandoned. However, Diana Myburgh, a brewery heiress, rescued him. Jason is a Whippet. They were both given trust funds of $50,000. As you might imagine, now their funds have more than tripled. It may not be $1 million, but it’s still a hefty fund. Besides, they own a 1,236 acre estate that is worth waaaaaay more than $1 million, and enjoy the finest steaks prepared by a personal chef and ride around in a stretch limo.

Tobey Rimes: A reclusive poodle who is worth $92 million. Tobey descends from a poodle who inherited $30 million from his New York owner, Ella Wendel, who died in 1931. Now Tobey is the poster dog for the benefits of trust funds and compounding interest. He makes #3 the list of richest pets ever, behind Gunther IV and a chimp named Kalu.

Some of the World’s Richest Cats

Cats already think that they are royalty. This list of cats rich enough to live like royalty is likely only to increase this feeling of pet entitlement.

Tinker: This is the classic rags-to-riches story. Tinker was a stray, regularly visiting Margaret Layne, an old widow. In return for Tinker’s loyalty, he was awarded a fortune. There is a $226,000 trust fund for Tinker, as well as a new home — worth about $800,000. Tinker has been joined by two lovely female cats, Lucky and Stardust. Of course, if Tinker returns to his wandering ways, the will strips him of his money.

Beryl Reid’s Cats: Beryl Reid was an actress. She had a lovely $1.8 million cottage. She was also famous for her love of cats. So, when she died, her cats Hamish, Boon, Eileen, Coco and Tuffnel inherited. A friend was commissioned to look after them as they lived in their house.

Lola, The Millionaire Cat: This cat isn’t a millionaire — yet. While the other cats on this list inherited their wealth, The Millionaire cat is trying to earn money through blogging. The Millionaire Cat has a blog that shows videos of this entrepreneur doing every day cat things. The Millionaire Cat is taking donations via PayPal, and hoping for enough money to become a millionaire. It’s an interesting concept, but, unfortunately, this cat hasn’t got a cent yet.

Red: A tabby cat who kept bachelor David Harper company. When Harper died, he left is $1.1 million estate to Red. The cat is cared for the United Church of Canada, and will enjoy the benefits of the best food, bedding and medical care for the rest of his life.

Blackie: When British recluse Ben Rea died, he left $15 million to various cat charities — and to his cat Blackie. Rea left nothing to his relatives, however. Everything went to Blackie and to help cat charities. We don’t have a picture of Blackie, who seems to be as reclusive as his owner, but here is a picture of a black cat enjoying life.

Fluffy: Mary Burton was a church organist in Great Paxton, Cambridgeshire, Enlgand. She left her entire estate to the Wood Green Animal Shelter, provided her cat — a ginger tom — was well cared for. Fluffy, the ginger tom, received $60,000, plus the ability to live in the house and be well cared for. His diet was even specified: steamed cod, lean roast beef, milk, frexh pilchards and vegetables. Fluffy also requires plenty of sun and relaxation. He’s probably not worth quite $1 million, but Fluffy lies better than a lot of humans. This is what Fluffy likely looks like (we couldn’t find a picture) — a regular ginger tom.

Brownie and Hellcat: These felines each received $415,000 in the 1960s when their owner, Dr. William Grier, died. Charlie Chan, another cat beneficiary of Grier, received $250,000. The legacies of Brownie and Hellcat live on, even though they are dead; each legacy is now worth $4.1 million. Not bad. I don’t know what Brownie and Hellcat looked like, but the cat pictured here is definitely living the high life.

In March, Beijing central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan roiled the global financial system by suggesting, in an essay aimed at an international audience, that a new reserve currency be adopted — one that could replace the U.S. dollar as the global currency predominantly used in trade between nations. Although not mentioning the dollar by name, there was little doubt what he meant. Zhou suggested that “special drawing rights” from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) be used as a global currency, based on shares held by member nations. Zhou cited the current global financial crisis as the main reason that relying on one currency is no longer feasible in a world where national economies are so interconnected. The fact that Zhou’s essay appeared closely behind remarks by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s voiced concerns about U.S. assets didn’t help matters.

The financial world was further rocked when U.S. Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, said that he was “open” to China’s proposal. Many took this statement at face value, fearing the worst: That the U.S. might actually back a move away from the U.S. dollar as the dominant currency in the world. As a result the U.S. dollar was savaged in a currency market bloodbath on March 25. However, Geithner was being diplomatic. Further remarks by Geithner made it clear. After saying that the Chinese proposal deserved consideration, and that he could see how it might benefit trade, he emphatically stated that there would be no global monetary union, and that replacing the U.S. dollar was very unlikely. A greenback recovery followed.

But talk about a global synthetic currency, based on special drawing rights from the IMF, has continued. The idea of a world monetary union is drawing continued attention on the imaginations — and fears — of world leaders, pundits and ordinary citizens. (Even Russia wants a global currency: A currency based on a gold standard.) Here are 20 resources that can help you sort out SDRs, past attempts at a world currency, and more.

The IMF and Its Global Currency (SDRs)

Here is some basic information on the International Monetary Fund and SDRs: Background, history and how it all works.

“About the IMF”: Learn about the International Monetary Fund from the source. The IMF was created in order to help coordinate international cash flow as countries worked together to rebuild after World War II. The IMF was originally designed to help maintain a stable system of monetary exchange based on the Bretton Woods system, which gasped its last when Nixon announced an end to the dollar’s peg to gold. The IMF’s role has dwindled somewhat over the years, but the latest financial crisis is bringing the body back to the forefront on international monetary policy. Recently, the G20 summit agreed to provide $750 billion in resources for the IMF.

“International Monetary Fund” from Wikipedia: Provides information in easy to digest format about the IMF, including criticism of the fund (notably from advocates of a free market system), as well as helpful information on voting rights and requirements for membership.

“Special Drawing Rights (SDRs)”: Once again, the source (the IMF) offers an overview. Special drawing rights are given to member countries, based on their quotas for providing financial commitment to the IMF. These rights represent a claim on the usable currencies of IMF nations. A basket of currencies (dollar, euro, sterling, yen) is used to provide the value of one SDR unit in relation to the U.S. dollar. However, SDRs haven’t been used for much beyond internal accounting since the collapse of the Bretton Woods system.

FACTBOX from Reuters: A concise, easy to understand look at SDRs, their history, and why some might find them appealing. SDRs were discussed at the G20 summit, but not in much detail. The idea of a monetary union remains rather distant and unlikely.

Aguments in Favor of Using SDRs

There are economists, policymakers and pundits who think that SDRs have their merits. However, many of them see a limited role for SDRs, rather than seeing them as a replacement for the U.S. dollar.

“How the Fund Can Help Save the World Economy”: This op-ed was written by Edwin M. Truman at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. While it falls short of calling for a global currency, it does offer an argument that using SDRs is possible in order to allocate funds to weaker economies in need of help. The idea is to use SDRs as a tool to help liquidity and reduce borrowing costs for hard-hit nations.

“Reform the International Monetary System”: The People’s Bank of China has posted the text of the essay from Zhou Xiaochuan online. It lays out a case for increased prominence for special drawing rights, and the pitfalls of relying overmuch on a single currency as a global reserve.

“We can’t ignore Zhou’s proposal for international reform”: This piece from Trade and Taxes lays out the reasons that U.S. policymakers should take Zhou seriously. Support for an expanded role for SDRs to supplement the U.S. The economists that write the blog put SDRs in context with Keynesian economics.

“One World, Once Currency” is a piece written by the Baha’i Association at the University of Florida. It’s an interesting look, from a spiritual standpoint, at the possible benefits of creating some sort of world currency.

Arguments Against SDRs as a World Currency

Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of opinion is against replacing the U.S. dollar with a global currency based on SDRs. While there are some that may not mind seeing the dollar dethroned, few are interested in the idea of a true world currency.

“New Global Currency Proposal: Good Diplomatic Theater but Bad Policy”: The Heritage Foundation looks at the idea of a global currency via SDRs from the standpoint of political theater — rather than as something that is likely to happen, or that should happen.

“China and the Dollar”: The Wall Street Journal lays out a case for retaining the U.S. dollar as the global reserve currency rather than diluting its influence through a global monetary union.

“Rebalancing Global Currency Reserves” offers a warning against complacency over a world currency based on SDRs. Instead, even though a world currency is not likely anytime soon, the U.S. should be vigilant about retaining its place.

Minnesota Representative Michele Bachmann thinks a world currency based on SDRs — or anything else – is a bad idea. She advocates a Constitutional Amendment, resolution or some other legislation to prevent the U.S. from every participating.

History of Other Proposed World Currencies

The idea of a world currency to ease trade is not a new one. At various points in history, attempts have been made to work off a single currency — at least for purposes of international trade.

“International Monetary Fund and World Bank” provides a look at the international exchange system developed at Bretton Woods, and how it differed from a true gold standard.

“World Currency” from Wisdom 2 Trade provides a look at the history of the concept of a world currency as a currency that most international trade is conducted with — and how the U.S. dollar has actually fit that description.

“The Gold Standard Revisited” is an excellent look at the history of gold as a currency and the international monetary systems that tried to make a gold standard work.

A History of Monetary Unions by John Chown is a book — with excerpts in electronic format — that follows the history of monetary unions through the ages, including a look at world trade agreements based on gold and bimetallism, as well as the euro, Latin American unions Bretton Woods and more.

Other World Currency Resources

Here are some things that others are saying about a world currency, and how it might work.

Since the recent stock market crash, many are losing faith in individual equities. As stocks drop, investors turn to mutual funds as a way to get instant diversification and to try to add a little safety to their investment portfolios. Here are 50 worthwhile mutual fund blogs that can help you learn a little bit more about mutual funds — and how to invest in them.

Fundamental Analysis

Looking at the underlying factors that affect the market, from the economy to monetary policy to fund management, fundamental analysis can give you the big picture.

MUTUALdecision offers commentary on economic policy and news and how it affects the stock market and mutual funds.

IndexUniverse specializes in index funds, mutual funds and ETFs. It’s all about funds here — and understanding the fundamentals behind investing in them.

Amateur Asset Allocator provides helpful information based on news and fundamentally sound investing analysis. While not exclusively devoted to mutual funds, there are articles that can help you learn about more effectively investing in them. I like this post reviewing four mutual funds for an IRA.

Consumerism Commentary offers information on a number of personal finance topics, including investing. Mutual fund analysis is offered, as well as reviews of companies like Vanguard that offer mutual fund investing.

The Oblivious Investor provides fundamentally sound ideas and insight into the market. He especially focuses on index funds as a way to build long-term wealth. I like this post on treating mutual funds like stocks.

Retire Rich offers insight into long-term investing with diversification. The idea is to use a number of investment vehicles — including mutual funds — to build a fundamentally sound retirement portfolio.

Living Off Passive Income provides insight and information into ways to generate passive income. Mutual fund investing is part of that equation.

Technical Analysis

If you are interested in charts and current movements, technical analysis can help you with short-term mutual fund investment moves.

ETF Trends provides information on exchange traded funds. These are funds that are traded like stocks on the market, and have many characteristics in common with mutual funds. Current trends in ETFs can help you analyze what may be an interesting move right now.

Fund Alarm is an interesting site that uses technical analysis to help you decide when to exit a mutual fund trade. It’s all about the exit.

Ripe Trade offers short-term analysis on possible trades now. This includes information on mutual funds, as well as other investments.

Skill Analytics is all about analysis of what is going on right now. Systems-based trading is the key — including when it comes to mutual funds and other investments.

Stock Tips for Indian Stock Market offers a look at the Indian stock market, which is generating interest. There are a number of tips for mutual fund investing here as well.

Mr. Swing provides news, information and more on mutual funds and other investments. Aimed mainly at day traders.

Trading

Follow trades, and get information on which mutual funds might be hot. Remember, though, that blindly following someone else’s advice can lead to losses.

Fund My Mutual Fund highlights trades made with regard to mutual funds and other investments. Details the reasoning behind the moves made, and makes cases for both bulls and bears.

It’s tax season! That means it’s time to file your tax return. Whether you expect a refund or not, you still need to file. Luckily, thanks to the Internet, there is no lack of Web sites that provide tools, forms and filing options. And many of them are free. Here are 25 Web sites that can make your tax season a little smoother.

First of all, I’d like to share three rather helpful general tax Web sites:

IRS.gov: If you want to talk about going to the source, the IRS Web site is it. Free downloads of forms, schedules and instructions, as well as helping filing your tax return. And, if you are looking for a list of partners in the IRS Free File program, you can find them on this Web site as well. All sorts of information — from filing an extension to setting up a tax payment plan — is available for free.

About.com has a great tax resource center. Tax planning advice, tax rate information, forms and more are all available at the U.S. tax planning site on About.com.

Taxalicious is a search engine for all things taxes. You can get federal forms and tables, as well as information on business tax and state taxes.

Filing Your Taxes

There are several Web sites that offer online tax filing services. Some of them can even help you file online for free as part of the aforementioned Free File program from the IRS.

TaxACT: One of the original free federal tax filing organizations. TaxACT can help you find and fill out forms, as well as file your taxes online. The site also features videos that illustrate filling out the forms, and a deduction examiner. For a fee, you can get access to even more tools and help filling out your state income tax return, as well as tax-related forms, such as the FAFSA.

H&R Block offers its TaxCut software online to help you file your taxes. There is a free federal edition with efile that you can use online. Of course, the more complex your taxes become, the more the fees start. You get access to tax tips and calculators when you visit H&R Block.

Jackson Hewitt has a Web site that is designed mainly to encourage you to go in to an office to have your return prepared (download a $30 discount!), but there are some helpful free tools available at Jackson Hewitt, including information on tax deductions related to your work, a W2 download and information on tax law changes.

TurboTax: Located on the Intuit Web site, TurboTax offers free software for simple federal tax returns. Of course, free efile is included with your return. If you have a more complicated tax return, or you want to do your state return, a fee is required. TurboTax comes with a deduction maximizer on its deluxe version and higher. Features a discount on paid software if you file before March 27.

ifileonline.com: You can get started for free, getting everything prepared. You aren’t actually charged until you go to print out your return, or if you file online. When you get started, the site helps you find the proper forms.

IncomeTaxPro.net offers printable forms for state and federal taxes. You can also get access to tax preparation software and find efile help.

FileLater is for those who want to file an extension. However, there is a fee associated with this service (you can file for free elsewhere). There is a good resource page, though, with answers to questions about filing an extension.

CFS Tax Software is actually a site for tax professionals. You can get what you need to help others file their taxes. I found it a valuable resource for those who are looking to set up a business helping others manage their tax-related needs.

Tools for tracking deductions

We all need help every once in a while with keeping track of our credits and deductible expense. Luckily, there are online tax tools — many of them free — that can help you keep tabs on credits and deductions.

CharityDeductions.com provides a place where you can keep track of your donations, cash and goods. There is a handy calculator that helps you figure out the fair market value of your donations as well. You still have to keep your receipts, but CharityDeductions.com helps you organize your information. And, before you donate goods, you can add up the market value so you know what to tell the thrift store. It does cost $19.95 per year, but if you give stuff away a lot, it turns out tomore than pay for itself — provided you have been underestimating your donations. Forms and other tax preparation tools are also available on this site.

DeductionTraQ is a free charity deduction offering. It, too, can help you organize your charitable donations and find fair market value for donated items. You can print form 8283 (customizable) and print out other reports. There are services that cost money, in addition to the basic free edition.

QuickMile: If you drive a lot for work, or if you keep track of mileage for your charity work, this software can help you keep track of your mileage for tax deduction purposes. It works with Palm, and you can back your records up on your computer. It is free to try, but with limited funcionality. You have to buy it for functionality. Bonus: MileageWiz offers a similar service.

Outright provides software aimed at small and home businesses. It is especially aimed at helping organize information in a way that helps businesses organize for tax season. It helps you keep track of Schedule C expenses and other deductions, as well as providing tools that can help you pay estimated taxes on time. There are free services, along with some paid products.

Federal Tax Calculator iPhone Web app: So it’s not really a deduction tracker. But it can help you quickly calculate your expected tax requirement or refund. It includes tax tables to help you quickly find your tax bracket and figure your approximate tax.

Blogs about taxes

Sometimes, when you’re looking for information, nothing beats a blog from a knowledgeable professional or expert. Here are nine blogs that can point you to more tax information, tools, tips and even forms and schedules in some cases. Warning: Some blogs may be a little behind on posting — it is the busy season after all!

TaxProf Blog: Written by Paul Caron, the Charles Hartsock Professor of Law at the University of Cincinnati, this blog contains a number of helpful tips and answers to questions about taxes. A number of useful links are also available on this blog.

Tax Foundation Blog: This is the official blog of the non-partisan Tax Foundation. Tax news and information, as well resources and links to commonly addressed tax topics.

Tax Relief Blog offers specific help and information about taxes and obtaining tax relief. It is the official blog of Roni Deutch, the “tax lady.”

As the price of gold remains solidly above $900 an ounce (it even topped $1,000 not too long ago), more people are asking this question: Whatever happened to the gold standard? Others are more concerned about the fact that we don’t actually have something physical to back up our currency. And why did we move away from using gold to guarantee our money anyway? These are daunting questions without easy answers. But if you’re interested, here are 25 places — in no particular order — that you can go to find out a little more about the rise and fall of the gold standard.

History of the Gold Standard

Precious metal-based currency systems have been around for literally thousands of years. Here are some good sites to research the history, rise and fall of the gold standard.

Wikipedia entry: “Gold standard.” This is actually a pretty thorough look at the history of the gold standard. A concise definition of what a gold standard is precedes an easy to follow look at the international gold standard, its peak, theories behind the gold standard, and the advantages and disadvantages of using a gold standard.

Federal Reserve Bulletin: “The International Gold Standard and U.S. monetary policy from World War I to the New Deal.” I found this via Find Articles and the BNET Business Network. This article from the June 1989 Federal Reserve Bulletin. It is an exhaustive (and sometimes exhausting) look at the rise and fall of the international gold standard and policy in the U.S.

The Concise Encyclopedia of Economics: “Gold Standard.” This is a fairly straightforward and, well, concise history of the gold standard, and how it worked. It also details the different incarnations of the gold standard, which persisted in some form until 1971.

EH.net: “Gold Standard.” If you are looking for a very detailed look at the gold standard and its history, this is it. Written by Lawrence H. Officer at the University of Illinois at Chicago, this is an extremely technical and in-depth look at the gold standard. It even includes tables.

World Gold Council: The Rise of the Gold Standard, 1660 – 1819. A fascinating look at the importance of gold in the British monetary system between 1660 and 1819. PDF documents back up the timeline, making it even more interesting.

Investopedia entry: “The Gold Standard Revisited.” Investopedia is one of my favorite places to learn about money-related items. The Investopedia entry starts us back 5,000 years ago, when gold was first use as currency. It follows history’s love of the shiny metal all the way to its height, and then chronicles how gold lost its luster as the exchange medium of choice.

Encyclopedia.com: “Gold Standard.” An overview of the different points in time in which a gold standard prevailed. It also includes information on the Coinage Act of 1873, confirming a gold-based currency in the U.S.

History Central: “Gold Standard Act – March 14, 1900.” The Coinage Act wasn’t the definitive word on gold. Learn about the effort to fix the exchange rate of gold to the U.S. dollar.

U.S. Treasury: “Chronology of Events, 1900 – 2003.” I was actually rather disappointed that the U.S. Treasury site did not have a great deal of information on the gold standard. But this timeline allows you to see what else was happening in the world during 1900 and 1933, times when the Treasury was involved with the gold standard. Also of interest, 1965 when silver coins were removed from circulation, and 1971, when Nixon devalued the dollar and essentially announced the end of any semblance of a currency back by gold.

Vassar: “The Gold Standard, Bimetallism or ‘Free Silver’?” This is a site devoted mostly to silver. But it offers a great look at a bi-metal currency system as well as a look at the gold standard.

Wikipedia entry: “Fiat Money.” Fiat money is important because the fall of the gold standard is entwined with the concept of fiat money.

Arguments in Favor of a Gold Standard

Not everyone who believes that currencies should be backed by gold is a “crazy”. Check out some of these well-written arguments in favor of a gold standard.

Mish’s Global Economic Trend Analysis: “Why does fiat money seemingly work?” This is an interesting look at our current system of fiat money, and how it works. A very in-depth history of the use of fiat money in Ancient Rome. This piece is skewed in favor of adopting a gold standard.

Gold-Eagle.com: “The Dollar Crisis.” This treatise by Robert Blumen includes a background on the gold standard touts the superiority of a system of exchange based on gold. It also includes and interesting look at the correlation between the abandonment of the gold standard and inflation.

Arguments Against a Gold Standard

Of course, as many arguments as there are for a gold standard, there as just as many against it.

University of Iowa: “What is the Gold Standard?” This entry from the University of Iowa Center for International Finance and Development offers a succinct overview of the gold standard and its theory. This entry refutes the idea that a gold standard is a good one.

About.com: “How Would a Return to the Gold Standard Affect the U.S. Economy?” One of the things I liked about this entry was that, in addition to balancing the advantages and disadvantages of the gold standard, it also looked at the practicality of returning to the gold standard in today’s economy.

New York Times: “Doubts About The Gold Standard.” I loved this. Go to this site to download a PDF of a story written in 1899 expressing doubt about the Coinage Act of 1873 and the gold standard.

It also offers some references for additional reading on the subject.

Marketplace: “Gold standard won’t make things better. American Public Media ran a story countering Ron Paul’s assertion that a gold standard would help fix the economy.
